A T4 Summary Report compiles the data from individual T4 slips issued to employees, including total earnings, Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions, Employment Insurance (EI) premiums, and income tax deductions for a specified calendar year. Employers use this summary to report total income and deductions for all employees, ensuring compliance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) tax regulations. It provides both the employer and the CRA with accurately calculated tax liabilities and potential refunds. Typically, this report is filed annually alongside individual T4 slips for each employee.

NOTE:  This report is linked to the tax wizard events and therefore should be accessed through the Tax Wizard for full functionality.

Form Setup

Before generating T4 forms, review the Form Setup tab for each T4 box and reporting field used by the company. The selected values determine which payroll amounts, taxes and deductions, employee fields, or custom fields populate the T4 output.

  • Review each configured box, including income, income tax, CPP, CPP2, EI, pensionable and insurable earnings, union dues, RPP contributions, charitable donations, pension adjustments, dental benefit code, and other boxes that apply to the reporting year.

  • Review Payroll > Taxes & Deductions and Employee > New Hire Defaults > Taxes & Deductions so the taxes and deductions used on T4 forms are assigned to the correct employees and future new hires.

  • For Dental Benefit Code (45), choose the code that applies when all employees have the same dental benefit plan.

  • If different employees or groups have different dental benefit codes, create a custom field for the appropriate level, such as Employee, Branch, Department, or Employee Title. Then choose -- Custom Field -- in Dental Benefit Code (45) and select the custom field that stores each employee's or group's code.
